SAMPLE DESIGNATION: Well LF-23, ST-1, measured depth interval 9800-9820 ft, or 2986.9-2993 m. True vertical depth interval is 9644-9664 ft, or 2939.3-2945.4 m.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This sample is about 100 m vertically lower than the other described LF-23 sample. It is even more highly contaminated than its counterpart from higher in the well (9540-9560 ft), containing 10% steel, 5% rust and geothermal scale, and 30% exotic drill chips clearly from much higher in the hole. The caved chips comprise metagraywacke showing only the effects of regional metamorphism (and locally containing pumpellyite), and regional-metamorphic calcite-quartz veins, among others.

• All other descriptors identical to the sample from 9540-9560 ft in this well (see companion summary), except as follows:

• Possibly slightly larger average grain size

• Slightly fresher rock (less alteration of mafics and feldspars)

• Minor secondary potassium feldspar replacing plagioclase

• Less orthopyroxene (about 1%)

• Appearance of tourmaline (1%) and ferroaxinite, the latter of which might be a caved contaminant (it occurs only as monomineralic drill chips)
